I first came up with the idea for this chat bot back in 1987, as a satire on artificial intelligence and chat bots. I was partly inspired by ELIZA, which barely recognized a handful of keywords but sometimes passed for an attempt at Rogerian psychotherapy. My other inspiration was Monty Python's Argument Clinic sketch. As far as economy of code goes, it turned out to be remarkably simple to model a noncooperative "debate" persona. Little did I know then that I was a futurist. I've since tweaked a few responses to stay current.
